May 01, 2024 Cultivate Well-Being for Youth Youth engaging in hands-on gardening and learning through community partnerships. Our partnership with Tilth Alliance at Bradner Gardens Park provides hands-on opportunities for youth to volunteer and grow alongside the garden as they help with the weeding, planting, watering, and painting rocks to label plants. Throughout the spring, our youth get to enjoy the outcome from their hard work as they witness the growth of the garden. In the summer, they learn how to harvest by handpicking and snacking on their veggies, plus they get to take some home to enjoy later! "We like to introduce youth to plenty of new things, and trying new veggies for the first time is one of them," says Sheena, our senior director of teen programs. "Even the kids who normally dislike vegetables grew a fondness towards some of them as they explored and learned about the different varieties." Some youth have been inspired to grow their own gardens at home. Digging in at Bradner has expanded their relationship with fruits and vegetables, taught them how to utilize them at home, and sparked their curiosity about the nutritional benefits of the food they eat.
